Jake Nolan -
Football & Culture Expert
Introducing our esteemed football and cultural expert Jake Nolan. Football has always been a massive part of his life. The sense of community, having a bit of a competitive edge and wanting to win together, that all comes from football
Listening to Pink Floyd, started DJ'ing and putting on events in Liverpool, and that’s when it all stopped. No more football. Between then and now, Sefton Park Rangers was born and has grown into a fully-fledged community football club with two men’s teams, a burgeoning veteran’s squad, and the recent addition of a women’s team to the roster. Jake and his band of community-focused volunteers have held two Community Cups which have raised thousands of pounds for local charities. Just how does someone go from late nights DJing and drinking and the occasional five-a-side kickabout, to the fulcrum of a community football club in five or six years?

From a young age I started reading maps instead of books. By the age of seven, I could draw a map of Europe with the capitals. This obsession never left me. Once a month, often every other weekend for the past 20 years I have booked cheap flights endlessly to explore off the beaten track destinations.
From Lodz to Villarrobledo I'm often greeted with "why did you come here on holiday?". At first it was straight economics. I would sell my fridge and go to Trapani on a £25 return flight. Find were the locals eat. Go to the cheapest bar and drink on the loudest table in there. The friends the places the food the barmy away marches become intoxicating. An addiction I can't stop.
Few people share my passion. Although most say they love travel. Overnight trains across dodgy borders and three quid bunk beds quickly find their limits. It was never about luxury. It was always about something bigger. Looking someone dead in the eye from a town far from blighty and completely understanding them. Feeling accepted and exploring life though their eyes.
The buzz of the BBQ on match day, the sour smell of a fresh polish pivo, to the sports coffee capsules shorted at the Olympic stadium at Roma v Livorno. We are all one family under football. I want to share with you insights in to the beautiful game from the less trodden path.
